The developers of 7 Days to Die have this week released the Alpha 17 Update on the experimental branch of the game, after almost a year and a half since the last major update. Although it has been so long since the last update, Alpha 17 is the largest so far, with a whole heap of new content. All the heavy framework changes have been made for the build already, so we can expect shorter 3 month build cycles for the game from now on.
Because this update is an experimental build, issues are to be expected. It still needs bug fixing, balancing and optimizations. More optimisations are coming, so if you are not getting the performance you did in previous builds, it has been recommended that you lower your resolution and view distance as the first steps. The game looks a lot better than previous builds even with a lower resolution and view distance as the HD textures, PBR and distance trees have really changed the game. If you are still not seeing enough performance, you should try lowering your reflection quality and tree quality.
Several of us here on the Streamline Servers staff team have tried out this new update, and we can all agree that there are lot of nice new changes, with a lot of old problems being addressed with fresh changes to the game. Although a lot of the changes will take some time to get used to, we think that the game was due for an update with some fresh content and changes, and this is what has been provided. If you are unsure whether you should try out the update, we would recommend doing so if you would like to try out the new features before they are fully released.
You might be wondering what’s new in this update. Well, the update comes with a whole lot of new content and changes, including but far from limited to the following:
- Party system
- New quest system
- New and updated locations
- New and updated vehicles
- New items & recipes
- New weapons and weapon improvements
- New stealth system
- Updated art, lighting, PBR rendering and texture streaming
- AI and pathing improvements
- Physical attribute skill system and progression
- UI changes and improvements
These are only some of the changes in this update. If you would like to view the full release notes for Alpha 17, you can do so by visiting the 7 Days to Die official Alpha 17 update post
